Just a few miles off the north of the Honduran Caribbean coast, lie a group of small islands known for their beautiful beaches and clear blue waters.  The islands are sorrounded by the second largest barrier rief in the world, providing fantastic opportunities for scuba divers.  The islands have become a regular stop for cruise liners on their Caribbean tours.

The Bay Islands are formed by three larger islands: Roatán, Utila and Guanaja, and three smaller ones called Morat, Santa Elena and Barbareta.  They are withing sight of the Honduran mainland.  Of all these, Roatán is the best known and the one with greatest tourism development, but don't underestimate what the other islands have to offer.

Getting to the islands

There are probably few places in Honduras more accessible than the Bay Islands.  The airport on Roatán caters for direct international flights from the southern USA or from the Honduran mainland.  A ferry regularly traveles from the city La Ceiba.  In recent years, cruise ships from the xxx line dock at Roatán to allow tourists to explore the islands.

Roatán

Roatán is the largest of the three main islands and is the more frequently visited by toursits. The better known hotels and resorts are located there.  The island stretches from east to west like a thin strip of land, xx km long but only xx km at its widest.

Guanaja was the first place in Central America to be visited by Europeans in the early XVI century, namely by Christopher Columbus and his crew.
